Upcoming: Late Roman Unarmoured Cavalry

The Light Cavalry Are Here

Reinforce your army with these exceptional additions to our Late Roman range. These finely detailed models pay homage to the fearless horsemen who played a vital role in Roman military strategy, excelling in scouting, relentless harassment of adversaries, and the pursuit of routed foes.

Available Friday (6th October)

Background

Recruited from all over the Empire, North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Germania etc, some of these cavalrymen retained the distinctive national look such as the Equites Mauri Feroces “Ferocious Moors”! Or the Equites Mauri Alites “Swift Moors”! We have given these heads a North African look and given them a hairstyle very similar to the Numidians.

There were varieties of Light cavalry, the Scutarii seem to have been bare headed but carried a larger oval shield. The Dalmatae carried the smaller round shield and Promoti carried an oval shield not quite so large as the Scutarii oval shield. All 3 shield types are included as well as bare, Moorish and heads in Pileus caps, a distinctive cylindrical hat made of fur or felt. Roman light cavalry did wear helmets but we have not included these on the frame due to space restrictions. However there are literally hundreds of spare helmet heads in the Late Roman unarmoured and Armoured infantry sets that can easily be used.

These again can be used for a wide variety of nationalities and not just Roman. If you use some Germanic or Goth heads you can easily make later Germanic and Goth unarmoured cavalry. And these can also be used as Early Byzantine and Roman British cavalry.

What do you get?

  • 6 Sprues (3 rider sprues and 3 horse sprues) = 12 riders and 12 horses.

  • 3 Shield types, small round, large oval and medium sized oval. Enough to equip each figure in the set the same.

  • 39 Heads

  • Sword, Javelin and Spear arm options

  • Vexilum and Draco standard bearer options, plus musician arm options.

There are no bow arms in this set as we have already sculpted a Late Roman horse archers set. The poses of horse archers are so distinctive and full of action that we decided they deserved their own pack. Nothing to stop you mixing Horse archer and light cavalry parts to create even more variety!
