Coming Soon - Pillage: Sieges & Strongholds

We're excited to announce Pillage's first ever supplement. Pillage: Sieges & Strongholds!

Storm castles, forts and motte-and-bailey strongholds with new siege rules and a reworked fire phase. The rules work for any siege from Antiquity right through to the late Middle Ages, with every engine from the Roman scorpion to the medieval trebuchet..

And to go with it, we've sculpted a brand-new plastic Siege Equipment set, packed with battering rams, mantlets, ladders, grappling hooks, cauldrons and more. You can see a first look at the renders above.

Both the book and the plastics will be out in very early 2027.

A new way to play Pillage

If you already play Pillage, you'll feel at home straight away, as all the core rules still apply. On top of them, the supplement adds a layer of special rules built specifically for siege battles, making games more tactical and giving attackers and defenders very different problems to solve.

  • A reworked fire phase: hurl incendiary projectiles at the enemy, then scramble to put out the blazes before they take hold.
  • Siege engines with their own rules: every engine behaves differently, adding depth (and plenty of fun) to every game.
  • Fighting on the walls and inside buildings: the battle doesn't stop at the gate.

How a siege plays

Every siege starts with a fortress. It can be as simple as a single wall running across the table, or as ambitious as a complete fort, a fortified keep or a motte ringed by a moat. Your imagination and your terrain collection are the only limits.

The fortress also sets the size of the battle. The bigger it is, and the more key features it has, such as towers and great gates, the larger the budget the defenders get to hold it. The attackers get a much bigger budget still, enough to bring the heavy kit they need to break in, as long as they're ready to take heavy losses doing it.

To crack a stronghold (or hold one), both sides can call on a whole arsenal of siege equipment: mantlets, battering rams, siege towers, ladders, ballistae, stone-throwers, incendiary projectiles, chevaux de frise and caltrops.

From Antiquity to the Middle Ages

Sieges & Strongholds isn't tied to a single era. It covers siege warfare from Antiquity right through to the end of the Middle Ages, with every engine from the Roman scorpion to the medieval trebuchet and even the flame-throwing siphon, so it will work alongside future Pillage supplements too.

What's inside the book

  • History: an introduction to the art of siegecraft and the different stages of a siege.
  • Rules: everything you need to fight over, and inside, defensive architecture.
  • Siege weapons: every engine available, with its special rules.
  • Hobby: guides to building your own siege engines and fortifications.
  • Campaign: play out an entire siege, from the first alarm as an invading army appears to the final assault on the walls.

Historical sidebars run throughout the book, full of stories from the great sieges of history to inspire your own games. Your warlord might even share the fate of Simon de Montfort at the siege of Toulouse, struck down by a stone hurled from the walls.

A book full of artwork

Sieges & Strongholds is packed with original artwork, from richly illustrated double-page spreads to the small details in the layout. Artists featured in the book: Ayman El-Sakrane, Even Amundsen, Gabriel Pissondes, Jonny Sun, Leslie Biao, Prosper Tipaldi and Stijn Windig.

New plastic: Siege Equipment

To go with the book, we've sculpted a brand-new plastic Siege Equipment set, packed with fun and vicious kit for both sides of the walls. It's designed for Sieges & Strongholds but works with any siege rules, and suits Dark Age, medieval and fantasy armies alike. Here's a first look at the renders.

Battering ram and covered penthouse

A large battering ram slung beneath a roofed, wheeled shed, ready to bring destruction to the enemy's gates. Leave the ram out and it becomes a covered penthouse, shielding your troops as they advance on the walls.

Hand-held battering rams

Two shorter rams for a band of warriors to swing at the gate. One has a carved ram's head, and the other comes with a choice of two heads: one reinforced with metal bands, or a simple log shaped to a point.

Mantlets

One large mantlet and two smaller wheeled mantlets, giving your archers cover from the defenders' arrows.

Scaling ladders

Two styles of 10cm siege ladder for getting your warriors over the walls.

Cauldrons, grappling hooks, forks and ropes

For the defenders, a cauldron on a frame for tipping hot oil, sand, water or lime onto the attackers below, and a forked pole for pushing their ladders away from the walls. For the attackers, a 10cm rope with a grappling hook for scaling the walls, plus a coiled rope and hook to hang on a miniature, ready for the climb.

Braziers and fire arrows

A metal brazier keeps a fire burning on the battlements, ready to light fire arrows and other incendiaries. The lit and unlit fire arrows can be used to convert any Victrix archer.

Your fortress, ready to print

Every siege needs something to besiege, so we've teamed up with Printable Scenery to give you a fortress made for Pillage. Working with Guillaume, they've designed Liness Castle: a compact, modular stronghold with curtain walls, towers, a fortified gatehouse with arrow slits and a timber-topped tower, built around the way Pillage sieges play.

Liness Castle comes as STL files to 3D print at home (or have printed for you), with an assembly guide included. It's built from modified pieces of Printable Scenery's King & Country and Throne & Ash ranges, so you can keep expanding it with parts from either. The castle costs US$35, or it's free if you already own both of those ranges.

More coming soon

There's more to come! So keep an eye on our blog, newsletter and social channels. This book and the set's to go with it are going to be something truly special.

Really cool. Heard about this already from the French news but the models are all new to me and really looking forward to it. Hopefully, we get some siege weapons too, like trebs and catapults.
